FAQs

General

What is an I-Lag screw used for?

An I-Lag screw creates a secure point for hanging ceiling wire, jack chain, or other light-duty supports in wood or metal. You install it directly into the surface, and the built-in eye gives you a strong attachment point for overhead work.

What makes an I-Lag different from a standard lag screw?

A standard lag screw holds two materials together. An I-Lag includes a formed eye at the top, allowing you to connect chain, wire, or suspension hardware without extra parts.

Why are there versions for metal and wood?

Metal-drilling I-Lags feature a self-drilling tip designed to penetrate thin-gauge steel. Wood-drilling versions use a sharp point designed to bite into wood without pre-drilling. Both achieve the same purpose but suit different substrates.

Product Features and Specifications

What materials are I-Lag screws made from?

They come in several finishes, including zinc plating, electroplated coatings, and corrosion-resistant stainless steel. The finish controls how well the screw stands up to moisture, chemicals, or harsh environments.

What thread sizes are available?

Most I-Lags use Type A threads sized for common ceiling wire and jack chain applications. Exact thread lengths vary by model, but all are sized for direct installation into wood or sheet metal.

Do I-Lag screws support heavy loads?

They are built for suspended ceiling wire, chain, or lightweight cabling. Load limits depend on installation quality, the base material, and local code requirements. Always follow your AHJ’s guidance when installing overhead supports.

Why do some I-Lags have a drill point and others a sharp point?

A drill point cuts through metal and forms its own hole. A sharp point is meant to penetrate wood cleanly. This prevents stripping, reduces installation time, and ensures the screw seats properly in the substrate.

Installation and Usage

How do you install an I-Lag screw?

You drive it into the surface using a drill fitted with the proper I-Drill Driver. The driver grips the head of the screw and keeps it aligned so the eye doesn’t twist or damage during installation.

Do I need a special tool for these screws?

Yes. The I-Drill Driver and I-Drill Driver SM are designed specifically for I-Lag screws. They hold the head securely, reduce wobble, and speed up the installation. They fit standard drill chucks, not impact tools.

Can I install these from the ground?

Many I-Lag screws are designed to be used with a pole tool. This allows you to fasten ceiling wire or jack chain from floor level without climbing a ladder, improving both safety and speed.

Can these go into thick steel?

Self-drilling models are intended for light- to medium-gauge steel. They are not meant for heavy plate steel or materials outside the gauge range listed by local code and testing requirements.

Applications and Compatibility

Where are I-Lags commonly used?

You see them in commercial ceilings, warehouses, retail spaces, data centres, and any project that requires suspended wire or chain. They create quick attachment points for cabling, lighting, and support hardware.

Are they suitable for outdoor installation?

Most zinc-plated options are intended for indoor tension applications. Stainless steel versions resist corrosion better and work in harsher or marine environments, as long as local code allows their use.

Can I use I-Lags for bird wire, netting, or safety lines?

Yes. The stainless steel models are built for environments where corrosion or moisture is a concern, making them suitable for bird control and similar overhead installations.

Do I-Lags work with jack chain and ceiling wire?

Yes. These screws are designed to be paired with ceiling wire or jack chain in various lengths and gauges. Many models may also be pre-loaded before installation if your setup requires it.

Safety, Ratings, and Approvals

Are these screws tested or certified?

Many models carry ICC-ES evaluation reports and meet RoHS and American Recovery & Reinvestment Act requirements. Certifications vary by finish and material.

Do installation limits apply?

Yes. Indoor-only models must not be used outdoors. Always check local building codes before hanging loads from ceiling structures or structural steel.

Are stainless steel I-Lags safe for chlorinated environments?

Stainless steel performs well in corrosive settings, but chlorinated atmospheres may cause stress cracking. Always check with your AHJ if you plan to install them near pools or similar environments.
