Toggle Bolts

Product Code: TB4

¼-20 x 4-1/4” Zinc Plated Acoustical Toggle Bolts

Application: Acoustical Toggle Bolts are designed for indoor vertical tension applications only. The substrate strength will determine the allowable load.

Instructions: Insert the Toggle Bolt through a ¾” hole in the substrate. The spring loaded wings will open once they are clear of the hole. Tighten the hex nut to secure the Toggle Bolt to the substrate.

FAQs

General

What is a toggle bolt?

A toggle bolt is a two-part fastener made for securing items to hollow or lightweight substrates. It uses spring-loaded wings that open behind the surface to create a strong anchoring point.

Where are toggle bolts typically used?

You use toggle bolts when you need reliable vertical tension support in acoustical ceilings, wall cavities, or other hollow construction materials. They’re meant for indoor installations.

How does a toggle bolt work?

You insert the folded wings through a pre-drilled hole. Upon entering the cavity, the wings spring open. Tightening the nut draws the wings tight against the backside of the surface, locking the bolt in place.

What size hole do toggle bolts require?

Toggle bolts require a hole wide enough to let the closed wings slide through. The exact size depends on the design of the bolt, so you always check the installation guidelines or product sheet before drilling.

Product Features and Specifications

What determines how much weight a toggle bolt can hold?

The strength of the substrate dictates the allowable load. Stronger materials provide better support. Toggle bolts rely on the surface behind the wings rather than the bolt itself.

Why do toggle bolts have spring-loaded wings?

The wings allow the bolt to anchor in open space behind the material. They expand automatically, making installation fast and secure without needing access to the backside.

Are toggle bolts corrosion-resistant?

Zinc-plated toggle bolts offer standard indoor corrosion resistance and are suitable for suspended ceiling applications, electrical work, and general hardware use.

Installation and Usage

How do you install a toggle bolt correctly?

Drill the required hole, fold the wings against the bolt, and insert the assembly into the opening. Once the wings snap open, tighten the nut until the bolt is secured against the surface.

Can toggle bolts be removed and reused?

You can remove the bolt, but the wings will fall behind the substrate once loosened. That means only the bolt is reusable, not the full assembly.

Who typically installs toggle bolts?

Electricians, low-voltage installers, ceiling contractors, and maintenance professionals use toggle bolts when mounting items to hollow or acoustical surfaces.
